About the Artist

Melvin Rowe at work in his studioMelvin D. Rowe, a Louisville, Kentucky native, has been selling his functional stoneware since 1971. He is the former director of Metro Arts Center, taught ceramics at Spalding University and since 1981 Rowe has been successfully retailing and wholesaling throughout the country. Rowe's artwork gained recognition early when; in,1978, he had a piece exhibited in Louisville's J. B. Speed Museum and other work in an exhibition at the Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences.

In the early eighty's, he pursued a career as a full-time production potter, but in recent years has returned to place more emphasis on his art. "My skills with the materials, which allow me to express myself the way I do, are a direct result of my ability to throw a form repeatedly with consistency and accuracy. That period honed my technical skills."

Rowe has three times exhibited in Germany as part of the Louisville Sister Cities program representing Louisville's art community. He holds a Fine Arts degree from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Louisville, both in ceramics. He is a juried member of the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation, the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, and has been president of the Louisville Craftsman's Guild.

Rowe lives in Henry County, Kentucky with his wife, Vivian, on his mini horse farm, Roweheim. His hobbies include amateur wine making, horseback riding, fishing and fly tying.
